Former NHS England Deputy Medical Director Dr Mike Bewick joins Asterix

We're delighted to announce that Dr Mike Bewick has joined Asterix Health as Strategic Medical Lead.

Mike brings decades of experience at the highest levels of NHS leadership. As former Deputy Medical Director of NHS England, Mike was responsible for Primary Care and implemented some of the most impactful patient safety changes in recent history, such as the Responsible Officer and Revalidation Programme.

Before that, Mike was a practicing GP and GP Partner in Cumbria, and Medical Director for NHS Cumbria — where he led the health response during the devastating 2009 floods. He knows firsthand what it means to deliver care under pressure, with stretched resources and impossible demands.

Why This Matters

Mike has been sounding the alarm about the GP workforce crisis for over a decade. In 2013, he launched NHS England's "call to action" on general practice, warning that primary care could not continue under the weight of unprecedented social and economic pressures. The challenges he identified then — increasing clinical admin, unsustainable workloads, practices closing — have only intensified.

Now, he's joining us to help solve them.

Mike's role as Strategic Medical Lead will focus on three core areas:

1. Clinical governance and quality assurance: ensuring our remote GP service maintains the highest standards of governance and clinical excellence.
2. Accreditation and training: Improving our bespoke Accreditation Programme to achieve better outcomes leveraging proven methods.
3. Service development: Helping us expand our clinical offerings in ways that genuinely solve problems for practices.

The Bigger Picture

Asterix is pioneering the workforce model endorsed by the NHS 10 Year Plan: UK-registered GPs providing NHS services remotely from abroad. It's a model that works — our practices see 30% cost savings while maintaining clinical quality and freeing up in-practice GPs for patient-facing care.
